A brief summary is given of some recent advances and future prospects in the study of neutral interstellar gas detected within the solar system. Satellite measurements of the Lyman-alpha (1216 A) and He I 584-A sky backgrounds are reviewed which generally confirm the view that most of this gas is of interstellar origin and predictions of the interstellar-wind model. Several theories are outlined which describe the interaction of the inflowing collisionless gas with the sun's gravity and ionizing radiation, the distribution of the detected interstellar hydrogen and helium as well as the resulting backscatter of solar Ly-alpha radiation, and various minor contributions to the netural gas. Future prospects discussed include simultaneous sky mappings at 1216 A and 584 A from a deep-space platform, systematic measurements with hydrogen and helium absorption cells, and measurements of solar-wind properties in the outer solar system.
