A model of dynamic fragmentation is developed which explicitly reproduces the growth of cracks in a brittle elastic solid. The model represents the rupture of bonds and the formation of new free surfaces. Possible applications of the model include studies of the formation of asteroid families, the disruption of ringmoons, the accretion of planetesimals, and spallation from large cratering events. The physical and numerical aspects of the model are examined, and results of tests aimed at validating the model are presented.
