The consequences of an impact interaction of an iron meteorite with a silicate target were investigated using a quartz crystal as a target and a ball made from the kamacite body of the Sikhote-Alin' meteorite as an impactor. Results of chemical analyses of the target fragments formed due to an impact at a velocity of 5.10 km/sec showed evidence of an exchange reaction 2Fe + SiO2 yields 2FeO + (Si), where (Si) denotes silicon dissolved in metal. This reaction explains the presence of Ni found after the impact in metallic spherules and in the vapor. Up to 1 percent of the Fe-Ni impactor was evaporated, with the target substance constituting about 2/3 of the vapor mass.
