The gamma-ray imager instrument, IBIS on-board INTEGRAL satellite is equipped with a dedicated Calibration Unit, CU. This unit is optimised for the high energy imaging plane of IBIS consisting of 4096 detector pixels operating in the 140 keV to 10 MeV range. The Calibration Unit employs a Na22 source (0.4 micro-Ci) that emits two lines at respectively 511 keV and 1275 keV, and the event processing allows for collection of calibration spectra by tagging of the calibration events. Gain variation can be measured to better than 1% on the timescale of hours. A linear channel-energy relationship can be determined on a daily timescale by using both Na22 lines. The reduction of line and continuum sensitivity due to untagged events is small. The paper summarises the scientific rationale behind the CU, gives details on the engineering design, and shows some test results.
