Sufficient inflation can be obtained, while the inflation field is close to the false vacuum for a renormalizable approximation to the full non-renormalizable potential to be valid; it is shown that this requirement is not compatible with a Coleman-De Luccia tunnelling mechanism. The spectrum of density fluctuations can, in this case, also be computed with the approximated potential. We list consistency conditions for cubic and quartic order expansions, which should be taken into account in model building.
