Within the framework of the guaranteed time granted to the FORS hardware team at the ESO VLT we obtained deep images of a field near the South Galactic Pole which was selected to be free of bright foreground stars and free of galaxy clusters. Long exposures with FORS of this FORS Deep Field (FDF) permit to reach about the same limiting magnitudes as HST WFC frames. However, the FORS standard resolution imaging mode covers a much larger (6.8' × 6.8') field and the MOS mode of FORS allows efficient spectroscopic follow-up observations of galaxies to about the 26th magnitude. In this talk we describe the results of photometric and spectroscopic observations of high redshift galaxies identified in the FDF.
