We present preliminary results from a two dimensional version of the Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA 2D) model of the effects of atmospheric gravity waves (AGW) on the brightness and existence of Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC). The model shows differences in the ice particle size and brightness of PMCs that depend on the spatial scale and period of the AGW. We present comparisons between our numerical simulations and observations from the Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) experiment on board the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) spacecraft. The CARMA 2D results on ice particle growth and brightness re functions of the existing background temperatures, wave periods, and wavelengths. Images from the CIPS instruments show systematic changes in PMC structure and brightness in areas of overlap in successive orbits spaced 90 minutes apart. The CARMA 2D model results show that the time periods required to raise ice particles to visual levels for CIPS observations are dependent on background temperatures and wave periods. The model results also indicate that overall cloud brightness is a function of the wave period, and the presence of short period AGW result in lower cloud albedos. Using SABER temperature measurements we present CARMA 2D simulations of inter hemispheric differences in PMC ice growth and brightness.
