Our primary objective is to continue investigation of the dynamics of Jupiter's atmosphere. Due to the expected lifetime of the Hubble Space Telescope and limited data rate from Galileo, the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in PC mode is the primary instrument for characterizing the global circulation and dynamic variability of the Jovian atmosphere. Our Cycle 6 observations are planned to enhance the data that will be acquired during the first 9 of the 11 scheduled orbits of the Galileo Mission. These observations, along with the photometric program separately proposed by Rages et al., are an essential part of a larger research effort that includes acquisition and interpretation of data from the Galileo orbiter and probe and analysis of groundbased and previous HST and Voyager data. The goal of this effort is to understand the general meteorology of Jupiter's atmosphere and transport processes that occur within it. Filters and observing sequences have been chosen that will provide the highest resolution available during the Galileo epoch to optimize measurement of horizontal motions, delineate vertical structure within the limitations of vignetting in the PC mode, and to characterize the spatial and temporal variations and interactions of organized systems within the cloud deck. The requested observing sequence integrates constraints imposed by the HST solar exclusion zone and the second servicing mission with periods when Galileo will observe the illuminated portion of the planet to produce an enhanced data set.
