The stability of a general class of first-order dissipative relativistic
fluid theories developed by Havas and Swenson is examined. If either the
shear viscosity coefficient or the coefficient of the acceleration term
in the heat-flow vector is nonzero, then all equilibrium states in the
theory are unstable.
