The Magnetic Field Experiment (MFE) on board the Polar satellite has been observing electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in different regions of the magnetosphere. In addition to the high-latitude EMIC waves that are associated with precipitating magnetosheath plasma as reported by Le et al. [2001], two types of EMIC waves generated likely near the equator are also found and are the subject of this study. The first type is the long-duration Pc 1 activity at low latitudes in the outer magnetosphere. On June 6, 2000, Polar observed a series of Pc 1 waves for two hours when the satellite traveled from L = 6.2 at magnetic equator to L = 9.7 at 24o magnetic latitude. The frequencies of these waves gradually decreased from 1.5 Hz to 0.3 Hz although the local proton gyrofrequency only dropped by 36% during the same time interval. The waves were left-handed polarized near the equator but were more linearly polarized at higher latitudes. These observational results are consistent with the picture that these EMIC waves were generated near the equator and propagating along field lines. The second type is the EMIC waves in the plasmasphere possibly associated with ring current decay. On May 7, 1998 when the magnetosphere was under the recovery phase of a magnetic storm, Polar MFE observed structured Pc 1 waves in two consecutive orbits when the satellite passed through a similar region at L = 3.4-3.8. The Pc 1 seen at 0340 UT had a carrier frequency at 1.5 Hz and wave amplitude of 0.5 nT. The next Pc 1 at 2125 UT was much stronger and its amplitude was as large as 4 nT. The fact that both structured Pc 1 events had a rather uniform carrier frequency below the rapidly changing local He+ gyrofrequency suggests that these waves also had a source region near the equator.
