It has been known for several decades through both observational and theoretical work that changes in solar wind dynamic pressure create magnetic perturbations inside the magnetosphere and on the ground. For instance, many previous studies have shown clear associations between shocks and sudden impulses, but these studies have rarely examined the sometimes periodic nature of fluctuations often found in the nominal solar wind. In this work we analyse several cases in which ULF pulsations were observed inside the magnetosphere and link them to periodic fluctuations in the solar wind. In particular, we show that the spectral content of the solar wind fluctuations is well correlated with that of the magnetospheric pulsations. This suggests that the ambient solar wind contains inherent periodicity and can be a direct source of magnetospheric ULF oscillations.
