We investigate the spectrum arising from a sizeable but slowly varying potential (e.g. a cos(2sπx/λ)) and a weak but rapidly varying potential (e.g. v cos(2πx)). The spectrum includes branches of amplified gaps. This may explain experiments on quasi 1d conductors in magnetic fields, and also certain gaps in the rings of Saturn, supporting a conjecture by Avron and Simon.
