Observational data on the Galactic carbon star G77-61 are summarized, with a focus on its elemental abundances and developmental status. The fundamental principles of abundance determination are reviewed; the significant depletion of heavy elements (relative to solar abundances) in G77-61 is documented in a table; and from these abundances and the kinematic data (showing that the star orbits an unseen, unusually cool white dwarf primary with a period of about 200 d) it is concluded that G77-61 was formed at an early period of Galactic evolution. It is proposed that the system formed from a mixture of primordial and hypernova-processed material, after which G77-61 received excess carbon from the primary star.
