U and Th contents and U, Th and Ra long-lived isotopes were measured in unaltered and in zeolitized Holocene volcanic ashes from the Phlegraean Fields, Campania, S. Italy. Ra, U and Th concentrations decrease with increasing zeolitization of the rock (Ra > U > Th). In unaltered ashes, near-equilibrium conditions exist between 226 Ra and 230 Th. 226 Ra contents of strongly zeolitized ashes however are 40-50 per cent lower than equilibrium concentration with the measured 230 Th. Equilibrium conditions prevail for the 232 Th series in all types of ashes. It is concluded that zeolitization processes lasted several thousand years after the eruption of the rock, but probably are not active at present, i.e. about 10,000 years after the eruption.
