Ground-based and satellite measurements have revealed the presence of plasma density inhomogeneities in the high-latitude ionosphere, practically at all heights, starting from lower boundary of the ionosphere up to heights in excess of 1000 km. In the present paper, it is shown that in the presence of large-scale meridional plasma density gradients, the 'kilometer-scale' inhomogeneities in the auroral ionosphere may be generated by Rayleigh-Taylor gravitational instability
