The present investigation is concerned with a description of the essential fluid mechanics phenomena. The occurrence of fluid mechanics instabilities in nature and technology is shown, taking into account examples related to meteorology, geology, and astrophysics. The examples are supplemented by applications related to aerodynamics, energy technology, and materials science. Attention is given to the Taylor instability, the Rayleigh-Benard problem, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, and two photographs of the Jovian atmosphere showing examples of shear instabilities. Of particular importance in aerodynamics are applications which affect three-dimensional flow separation and the laminar-turbulent transition. This importance is related to possibilities for the reduction of fuel consumption.
