Ziegler's derivation of fundamentals of nonequilibrium thermodynamics is of deductive and formalized nature. Despite this approach being typical for modern phenomenological thermodynamics and mechanics, it is obscure for the scientific group applying statistical methods in nonequilibrium physics. We consider relaxation of an isolated system to the equilibrium using Onsager's fluctuation approximation. There is a small deviation from the equilibrium in two parameters. For this system, it is shown that unconditional maximization of trajectory entropy is similar to Ziegler's maximization of entropy production subject to a condition which is the detailed balance condition. As a result, the relation between Ziegler's variation method and the conventional statistical method is shown.
