The letter reports the operation of a free-electron laser oscillator above threshold at a wavelength of 3.417 microns. The device described involves generation of a periodic transverse 2.4-kG magnetic field by a superconducting helix, firing of a 43-MeV electron beam from the superconducting accelerator along the axis of the helix, amplification of radiation passing through the helix with the electron beam, and feedback provided by a pair of mirrors at the ends of the interaction region. Oscillator characteristics include an average power output of 0.36 W, peak power of the order of 7 kW, intracavity power of 500 W, total collected energy comprising 0.01% of the electron-beam energy, and an oscillator line width of 8 nm (200 GHz). Differences between the laser and spontaneous spectra are discussed along with limitations on laser efficiency, improvement of the laser line width and gain profile by means of intracavity dispersive elements, and the use of electron storage rings for further improvement of line width and average power output.
