The evolution of a rapidly rotating viscoelastic body, moving in an elliptic orbit in a central force field, is studied. An asymptotic method for separating the motion, developed by Vil'ke for systems with distributed parameters, is used. Within this approximation, the slow motion of the angular momentum vector with respect to the orbital plane is studied in detail. It is shown that gravitational capture of the system finally takes place, such that the intrinsic angular momentum of the body tends to occupy a position normal to the orbital plane.
