The problem of radiation transfer in the spectral lines of oxygen atoms at wavelengths of 98.9, 102.6, and 130.4 nm in daytime conditions and of helium atoms at 52.2, 53.7, and 58.4 nm in the daytime and nighttime atmosphere is solved in a realistic formulation. Attention is given to different external sources for the population of excited atomic levels, and the role of each is evaluated. Vertical profiles of the sum emission intensity from 100 to 1000 km for observation at zenith and nadir are presented.
