The authors investigate the origin and propagation of tsunami waves caused by infall into the oceans of cosmic bodies with diameters 0.2 - 10 km and velocities of order 20 km/sec. They numerically modeled the impact of comets with diameter 2 and 6 km into an ocean of depth 4 km. By comparing theoretical and experimental data, they develop some general rules of wave propagation, applicable both in the initial phase of generation of high waves, as well as at substantial distances from the impact site. They point out certain peculiar properties of the interaction of the wave with various relief features in the ocean floor in the "shallow water" approximation.
