Emission in the 70-500 Hz frequency range was detected at the earth surface in observations made at subauroral latitudes at the Lekhta station. The frequency of the emission maximum was found to increase monotonically at a rate of 0.5-2 Hz/min from 70-100 to 200-500 Hz. It is suggested that this emission is generated in the ionosphere in a transition from the daytime to the nighttime state. It can be induced by magnetospheric-ionospheric currents or gradient-drift instability arising in a region of plasma turbulence produced by the motion of the terminator.
