The general theory of the floating potential of a cosmic grain (Lafon et al. 1980) was used to investigate the importance of the thermionic emission for interplanetary iron and carbon grains in the vicinity of the sun. This emission prevents the potential of carbon grains from becoming strongly negative and allows small grains to exist in regions where they would otherwise be destroyed.
