Observations reported by Leventhal et al. (1977) concerning the detection of a line feature at 400 keV emanating from the Crab nebula are considered. It is pointed out that large magnetic fields at the surface of neutron stars favor the formation of a condensed phase of electrons and positrons. The observed gamma-ray line can, therefore, possibly be accounted for by taking into consideration a flux of electrons and positrons from this phase at the surface of the neutron star in the Crab. Details concerning such a possibility are discussed.
