The knowledge of the distribution of physical properties within a self-gravitating fluid cylinder is of considerable importance in understanding the properties and dynamics of the spiral arms of galaxies. In this paper, the distribution of density and mass within an infinite gravitating cylinder is investigated for cylinders composed of both polytropic and degenerate material. The equilibrium structure of the cylinder is determined from a study of these properties, and the effects of cylinder rotation are examined.
