Observations of elliptical galaxies identify two main features that still lack a proper interpretation: (1) Ellipticals are mostly pressure supported systems. (2) Their luminosity profiles follow an empirical law with striking regularity. Theoretical considerations and important N-body simulations suggest that these galaxies should be described by a distribution function dependent on three integrals of the motion. The authors illustrate the properties of a family of self-consistent equilibrium models that is found to provide a natural dynamical basis for the luminosity law of elliptical galaxies.
