Transionograms obtained by the Intercosmos-19 satellite have disclosed the presence of additional or secondary pulses. It is suggested that the occurrence of these so-called transionograms can be explained either by the existence of a region in the ionosphere (in the radio-visibility zone of the satellite) with sharp electron-density gradients or by the existence of a second energy-channeling condition for radio-wave propagation at frequencies above the critical frequency of the F region.
