It is pointed out that the Lorentz linewidth used in the calculation of the combined Doppler and collision-broadening effects should depend on the velocity of the molecules. The Lorentz linewidth is to be averaged over the thermal population after taking into account the Doppler effect. On the basis of a numerical investigation it is concluded that for an accurate comparison of theoretical and experimental results the Voigt line shape should be modified.
