In a recent letter, Krasilnikov et al (1974) have put forward some evidence for a huge anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic-ray primaries with energies above 10 to the 19th power eV. This evidence has been claimed to be supported by some earlier results at lower energies. The present paper gives a detailed discussion of the statistical selection effects involved and concludes that the anisotropy is not proven. Some astrophysical implications of the anisotropy, if genuine, are also considered.
