A theoretical analysis of the midlatitude distribution of oxygen and hydrogen ions in the upper ionosphere is presented, taking into account the reversible charge-transfer reaction O(+) + H yields H(+) + O, diffusion, and hydrogen ion fluxes along the magnetic field. The dependence of the vertical distribution of hydrogen-ion concentration on the magnitude of the protonospheric flux is examined.
