A method is proposed for the simultaneous numerical solution of the balance equations and the one-dimensional transfer equations for close atomic levels with high quantum numbers (60 to 610). This method is based on division of the level system into zones and computation of line decrements within each zone. The method is applied to determine the number of quanta in lines of different zones and the line decrements for the different zones as well as for various depths within each zone. It is found that the series decrements in the different zones for a state of illumination are nearly equal, indicating good convergence of the results. The results are compared with values determined for high-quantum-number line series observed in the emission nebulae M17, M16, W51, W43, and M42.
