Gaining insights in to the details of planetary system formation requires studying both the emissive properties of dusty circumstellar debris and ascertaining the spatial distribution of circumstellar material without ambiguity. Observations of circumstellar dust-scattered starlight have been difficult because of the very high disk-to-star contrast ratios so, to date, only a small handful of spatially resolved images of debris disks exist. To expand this sample, in HST cycle 13 we conducted a NICMOS coronagraphic debris disk imaging survey (GO/10177) to probe the posited epochs of planetary system formation and evolution in GO/10177. Half of our 52 target sample are main sequence stars with ages > approx. 10 Myr with strong 25 + 60 micron IR excesses (thermal emission from circumstellar dust).
In this poster, part 1 of 2 posters on the GO/10177 debris disk survey, we describe our target selection process and present an overview of our sample properties. We highlight our data reduction techniques and present preliminary upper limit fluxes to scattered light from the dust grains and briefly explore inferred grain properties in cases where we do not resolve the disks. In part 2 we present images and derived properties of the resolved disks.
