Studies of Pi2 pulsations usually focus on the relationship between their onset timing and substorm initiation. However, the pulsations also carry additional information that is useful in tracking the spatial and temporal development of substorms. For example, previous studies related the orientation of the major axis of polarization observed in ground Pi2 to the local time of substorm current wedge. In this study we use Polar UVI auroral images and low-latitude ground magnetometer data from the Circum-pan Pacific Magnetometer Network to find the quantitative relationship between the spatial and temporal features of auroras and the properties of Pi2 pulsations. Once the relationship is established, it can be used as the basis for algorithms to continuously monitor substorms and auroras. We consider Pi2 signals to be two-component time series bx(t) and by(t) in the horizontal plane and determine their properties in terms of parameters defined in optics: frequency, amplitude, azimuth of the major axis of polarization, and ellipticity. The parameters are defined in a 300-s moving time window by fitting auto-regressive (AR) series to the data. We examine even small-amplitude oscillations that normally would not be classified as Pi2. Results are presented for a series of well-documented substorms on April 3, 1996, reported by Liou et al. [J. Geophys. Res., page 22,807, 1999].
