We report the observation of counter-streaming suprathermal electrons within some, though not all, coronal hole-related fast solar wind flows measured at 1 AU with Los Alamos instrumentation on the ACE and Genesis spacecraft. One electron stream is simply the anti-sunward beam produced as suprathermal electrons escape from the solar corona along open field lines, becoming focused parallel to the field as they travel out. The counter-stream in the fast flow events discussed here appears to be produced by electrons leaking out of co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) at greater heliocentric distances and travelling back toward the sun along the interplanetary magnetic field. In several cases the counter-streaming is observed immediately after the passage of a reverse shock. In such cases local magnetic connection to a CIR is clear. The counter-streaming may also be found hours to days after the onset of the fast stream, indicating a more distant magnetic connection to a CIR. Electron counter-streaming within co-rotating high speed flows on field lines which are open, but connected to CIRs, was reported in earlier work for Ulysses measurements made beyond 2 AU. However it was previously thought that such counter-streaming was unlikely to be important near 1 AU. We will present observations of sets of repeating high speed flows observed from December 1999 to March 2000, and from January 2002 through March 2002. The counter-streaming electrons found within many of these fast flows can have a character very similar to that observed on coronal mass ejection closed loop field lines. This similarity has important implications for the autonomous CME recognition algorithm employed by the Genesis satellite.
