A significant increase was detected in the content of cosmogenic isotopes in Antarctic and Greenland ice and in stalagmites over a period of 35-40 million yr. The totality of experimental data is best explained if the explosion of a nearby supernova is the source of the heightened intensity of Galactic cosmic rays. A theoretical model which satisfactorily accounts for the experimental data is presented.
