The ~ 5 km of traverses and associated observations completed by the Opportunity rover from Eagle crater to the Purgatory ripple region show that the plains are covered by aeolian deposits composed of basaltic sands and gray hematite spherules. Spectral reflectance values for Mars Express OMEGA data covering the rover traverse regions are dominated by pyroxene, plagioclase feldspar, gray hematite, and dust, consistent with Pancam, Mini-TES, and Mossbauer Spectrometer observations. OMEGA data for the bright region to the south of Purgatory dune indicate that there is less gray hematite and more dust as compared to regions to the north. Low albedo, wind-swept plains located several hundred kilometers to the south have more gray hematite and olivine as compared to the landing site. Pyroxene dominates signatures from the cratered highlands to the south of the Opportunity landing site and also ejecta deposits from a ~ 20 km diameter crater that impacted through the plains materials. The plains surface cover consists of lag deposits (hematite granules) left behind as relatively friable sulfate-rich rocks (observed by the rover on crater walls) were preferentially eroded by wind, combined with basaltic sand advected onto the plains by wind.
