Long-period (T much greater than 1 min) flute oscillations in the plasma sheet are examined with allowance for the effect of field-aligned currents on ionospheric conductivity. The flute disturbances and the related conductivity disturbances may propagate across the magnetic field lines and increase. The disturbances propagate predominantly in the direction of the undisturbed ionospheric current with a velocity several times greater than the electrical-drift velocity. Westward-propagating luminescence waves and asasociated Ps6 phenomena observed during substorms may be manifestations of such waves.
