The solar particle events of May 4, 1960, November 15, 1960, November 22, 1977, and May 7, 1978 are analyzed to determine the energy spectra and pitch angle distributions of the solar protons near earth as a function of time. The analysis of the first two events is based on neutron monitor (NM) data only and covers the energy range from 500 MeV to 10 GeV. For the latter two events, both NM and satellite data are available, making it possible to extend the continuous energy range to about 50 MeV. It is found that the difference in the observed NM rate increases and energy spectra are not directly correlated and can only be understood by considering the anisotropy-time profiles and pitch angle distributions. It is also noted that since the two May events are nearly scatter-free, the NM rate profiles and energy spectra of the solar particles near earth can be used to study the injection conditions at the sun.
