The Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite (ARGOS) supports a number of instruments designed to measure the electron and ion densities in the upper atmosphere. The Coherent Electromagnetic Radio Tomography (CERTO) instrument transmits 150 and 400 MHz signals to be received by a network of ground receivers. The received signals are analyzed to yield total electron content (TEC) and phase scintillations. The High Resolution Airglow & Aurora Spectroscopy (HIRASS) experiment uses a number of imaging spectrographs to record the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emissions produced in the atmosphere. Electron densities are obtained from 91.1 nm emissions, which are the result of radiative recombination between oxygen ions and electrons in the ionosphere. Limb scans with the Low Resolution Airglow and Aurora Spectrograph (LORASS) instrument in HIRAAS yield electron density profiles that are compared with the profile reconstructions obtained independently with the CERTO beacon signals. The combination of date from the two instruments has been successfully employed to provide (1) improved tomographic reconstructions of the midlatitude ionosphere and (2) cross calibration to the sensors. The results of the measurements are compared with numerical simulations with the NRL SAMI2 model.
