Molecular Clouds: Star Formation, Molecular Clouds: Collapse
Scientific paper
A review is given about the various attempts to model star formation by means of detailed numerical calculations. After recapitulating Larson's (1969) classic picture of protostellar collapse, attention is focussed on recent investigations concerning the stability of stellar core embryos. Mechanisms for angular momentum transport in collapsing cloud fragments are discussed (turbulent friction, gravitational torques, magnetic braking) on the basis of existing model calculations. Problems related to the formation of the solar nebula and binary or multiple stellar systems are briefly outlined.
