Coherence between atoms that radiatively decay can lead to an enhancement in the decay rate in Dicke superradiance. The mathematical description of many two-level systems is normally done using Dicke states, which are constructed by making use of an angular momentum description for states made up of many spins. Some of the models presently being examined at MIT to account for anomalies in metal deuterides involve many three-level systems or many systems with more levels. A preliminary examination of the symmetric states of such systems indicates that Dicke coherence factors are expected. The raising and lower operators that correspond to collective excitations from one level to another within the three level system in this case give rise to Dicke factors similar to the two-level version of the problem.
