2764 Plasma Sheet
Scientific paper
On January 14, 2001, Cluster crossed the outer boundary of the plasma sheet into the lobe at a radial distance of about 4.4Re (-3.2 Re, -2.5Re, 1.7Re). The Cluster spacecraft during this crossing were separated by several hundred km. The Cluster Ion Spectrometer (CIS) experiment was operating in fixed energy mode detecting ions between 650-850 eV/charge. Preliminary CIS measurements here indicate presence of field-aligned ions of H+, He+, He++ and O+ and the Electric Field and Wave (EFW) experiment measured fields larger than 40 mV/m across the boundary. Time delays and varying features were recorded by the different spacecraft. This crossing was observed during the recovery phase of a substcorm. This talk will discuss the spatial, temporal and dynamical aspects of this event.
