An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique which involves stepwise etching by argon ions was used to study surface-layer elements that have been reduced from their oxidized state and surface-layer structural-chemical parameters of fine fractions of the regolith. Elemental iron, titanium, silicon, and aluminum were found on the surfaces of all particles, and the concentrations of these elements diminishes with depth in a regular fashion. The data suggest that the surface is covered by an amorphous film with variable thickness. Cosmic rays are thought to be responsible for surface modifications.
