Scientific paper

Once the Eddington planet finding field is selected, ground-based preparatory observations will be required to characterise the stars in the selected field. The field-of-view (FOV) of Eddington in planet finding mode will have an area of ~25 sq.deg. Therefore, the most suitable techniques for the ground-based preparatory observations are wide-field CCD mosaic imaging and wide-field multi-object spectroscopy. In the present paper, we discuss strategies to carry out the photometric characterisation of the field, and we propose to use the VST+OmegaCAM system to contribute to this characterisation.
