Laboratory heating (in air) often results in irreversible changes of remanence properties in natural rocks. Such an effect was traced for a recent basalt sample containing titanomagnetite (x = 0.4) as the main remanence carrier for heating times between 3 and 300 min. It is shown that the change can be explained by the scheme of high-temperature oxidation
Titanomagnetite(PSD, MD) --> Iron-rich phase (SD) + Ilmenite
Remanent magnetizations in both the original and heated samples are the mixtures of two components; high blocking temperature, high coercivity fraction and low blocking temperature, low coercivity fraction. The TRM and ARM show distinctly different behaviors in this change showing the limitation of using the ARM as an analog of the TRM.
