The distance to the LMC is crucial to calibrating the cosmic distance scale but remains controversial and uncertain despite the efforts of many investigators ((V-M_v)_0=18.2 - 18.7 mag). Recently we have shown that the analysis of eclipsing binary (EB) systems has the potential to resolve this controversy. Guinan et al (1998, ApJL, 509, L21) analyzed ground- and space-based observations of the LMC EB HV2274 and determined a distance modulus of (V-M_v)_0=+18.30+/-0.07 mag. While it has long been recognized that EBs provide fundamental determinations of the basic stellar properties, such as mass and radius, the analysis of HV 2274 shows that they also serve as accurate and precise standard candles. For the first year we request Blanco 4-m echelle observations to obtain radial velocity curves for an additional 5 eclipsing binaries in the LMC. When combined with existing light curves and existing HST low-dispersion spectroscopy (1150 A- 4800 Å) the analysis of these data should reduce the uncertainty of the LMC distance to better than 2-3%.
