The present study of the effects obtainable by applying different growth speeds and thermal annealings to Bridgman-grown mercury-cadmium-tellurium (MCT) crystals has characterized the results thus obtained with EDAX and X-ray topography. It is shown that good crystal quality and low composition dispersion are obtainable in MCT single crystals even when low purity material is employed, provided that the appropriate values of growth speed, and subsequent heat-treatment temperatures and times, are chosen. Hall-effect measurements confirm that high impurity density determines the majority carrier-concentration type and value.
