The single bipolaron problem is examined in the context of the 1D Holstein-Hubbard model by combining a detailed analysis of the adiabatic limit with accurate numerical results. Analogies with polarons are emphasized for the case involving only Pauli correlations. The interplay between the instantaneous Hubbard repulsion $U$ and retardation effects due to the lattice coupling are investigated, showing that for large U the pairing is possible when electrons adiabatically adjust to the lattice. The bipolaron band structure involving multiple bands below the phonon threshold is calculated to reveal a detailed mechanism of adiabatic, nonadiabatic and lattice coarsening effects for the formation of light bipolarons with substantial binding energies. It is argued that in the dilute limit a condensation of bipolarons occurs only at low temperatures.
