In simple metals the conduction electrons are approximatively independent and free. This is also the case for clusters of simple metal atoms. Nucleons in nuclei also behave as delocalized and independent fermions. This generic behavior invites us to bring out analogies between metal clusters and nuclei. The analogies manifest themselves in the elementary modes of excitation of finite quantum systems. However there are also major differences that arise from the presence of ions in metal clusters. Fission of nuclei and clusters exemplifies these differences. .
