Nonlocal thermal equilibrium calculated vibrational temperatures of CO2 and N2 in the z region between 40 and 140 km altitude are presented and compared with previously reported data (Kumer and James, 1974). The vibrational temperatures corresponding to the weak CO2 nu3 band are calculated, and their qualitative behavior is analyzed. Uses of resolved measurements of zenith or earth limb radiance in the fluorescent bands are discussed. Methods of computing CO2 nu1nu2 vibrational temperatures are examined.
